Head: Skull broad, strong jaw, large nose, muzzle of medium length, not pointed
Ears: Small, V-shaped, dropping to the head
Eyes: Medium-sized, brown or hazel
Tail: Medium length, straight, strong at the root and towards the end evenly narrowed – known as “Otter Tail
Hair: Short, hard, sharp, dense, straight

Height: Male: Male 57–62 cm (22.5–24.5 in) / Female: 55–60 cm (21.5–23.5 in)

Labrador Retriever – history, physical characteristics and character


Labrador Retriever originated in the Canadian peninsula of Newfoundland in the region St. John’s, where he was known by the name “small water dog“.

There, this dogs have been a great help to fishermen.

They dragged nets and brought fish that have escaped from the nets, as well as other objects from the water.

Also, they were guardians of the warehouse, where fishermen stored and salted fish.

According to legends, this breed was created by crossing St. Hubert and Newfoundland breeds.

At the end of the 19th century, Newfoundland introduced high taxes for keeping these dogs and therefore their number substantially reduced.

Labrador Retriever

Meanwhile, fishermen and fish traders bring some of this dogs to England.

Thanks to the crossroads with various hunting breeds, this little water dogs perfected their hunting abilities.

Selection and interbreeding resulted with three types of retrievers; flat-coated retriever, golden retriever and labrador retriever.

This breed was recognized in England as a Kennel Club breed in 1903.

In the United States of America it was registered by the AKC in the 1917.

After that, performed a huge popularity of the breed, especially in aristocratic circles.

Besides perfect retrieving ability,  Labrador Retriever had (and still has) the unmistakably instinct for founding and bringing birds which fell in ponds and marshes.

In hunting adventures of the aristocratsthis, this dogs perfectly complemented other hunting breed and therefore their popularity not abated –  on the contrary, over the years it has continued to grow.

Connoisseurs of the Labrador Retrievers say that this breed is not really gifted with a hunting instinct.

They belive that their excellent hunting abilities are result of their enormous need to meet the expectations and satisfy the master.

Physical characteristics

There are two types of this breed; English Labrador Retreiver and American Labrador Retriever.
Their diversity is manifested in physical characteristics.
American Labrador Retriever is slimmer build and look more elegant.
They are slightly higher, have longer legs, elongated nose, thinning hair and a thinner and longer tail, which to them (unlike the English type) is not emphasized as the otter tail“.

English Labrador Retriever is a massive, stronger and is identified by its stocky, square shaped body.

Head of English type is as strong as the jaw and chest.

It has thick, firm, slightly sharp.

Tail is typical and recognizable “otter tail” – medium length, straight, strong at the root and towards the end evenly narrowed.

By the standard the tail must not be bent.

If it comes to color, there are: black Labrador, yellow Labrador and chocolate Labrador.
Black was the dominant color until 1899.
After that were bred yellow, and later, selectively breeding occurred beautiful and today very popular – chocolate colors.
Inbred, depending on which gene for color carried by parents, in one litter can be present all three colors.

These dogs are great gourmets and tend to accumulate excess weight.

That is why special attention should be paid to their diet.

For this breed is necessary regular physical activity in order to prevent obesity, and thus health problems.

Personality of the Labrador Retriever breed

Wery well known characteristics of the Labrador Retriever breed are: non-aggression, intelligence, warmth, playfulness, kindness, loyalty, commitment, ability to adapt, willingness to learn and endeavor to please the owner.

They are faithful, gentle, especially with children, older people and other animals.

These dogs are not angry, and they can forgive easily.

They are very vigilant and careful.

In their behavioral aggression is very rare,  but when it is necessary they know how to protect themselves or the owner.

Labradors are friendly and always ready to play.

In their personallity stands out obedience, and above all love tweaking owner.

The above features make them nearly ideal dog and because of them they are very desirable as pets.

In support of this testifies the fact that this breed is one of the most popular in America and Europe.

Statistics show that the annual number of puppies in America is around 160,000, while, for example, German shepherds is only about 50,000.

Lovers of water
They love water and will use every opportunity to bathe, or at least dip their paws :)

A long time ago, in the 19th century, Labradors are trained for bringing birds and other animals, so today  they are very skilled in these disciplines.

For the love of the water and sharp hunting instincts they will jump in the coldest water, without thinking, and they surely will not come back “with empty paws” – they will find object and bring it, no matter what

Nature gave them incredible intelligence
Labrador Retriever is one of the most skillful breed when it comes to mastering the skills to guide blind and visually impaired people.

Therefore they are the most common in this type of training.

Because of the exquisite smell they work with the police in actions of discovering and detecting drugs.

Labradors are also very well known as therapy dogs.

They learn and understand commands very quickly, which is very important for maintain the will and desire and also for further education and training.

This breed approach to treining with joy and enthusiasm and thanks to the intelligence they quickly overcome every command.

However, the greatest joy for Labrador Retriever breed is family and all family activities.

They will use every opportunity to be present in your environment and to establish themselves in your society.

Boredom and loneliness in this breed can cause behavioral problems and easily discernible sadness.

Deficiencies of the Labrador retriever breed
By their nature they are not aggressive, so this breed is not suitable for guard dog.

With pleasure and joy they are ready to host all known and unknown guests.

Labs have that kind of atitude, even if they see somebody for the very first time.

They will just a little bark to announce the arrival of a stranger and then  begins happines and kind, sociable and friendly appearance.

Labrador Retriever approached to enybody, even to total strangers and therefore, unfortunately, it is very easy to steal them.
